Really liked this book. A great sequel to the first in the series, TAU4, which was a marvelously done piece. Provocative, passionate story with through-the-roof visuals, twists in both plot and character development, and a climax that you won't see coming until it hits you in the face. Storytelling at its best. I could also just say "gosh, I thought it was really cool."
Hammerspace is a worthy successor to Tau 4. The writing is vibrant, the action is colorful, the images are vivid, and characterizations are in the best pulp tradition. V. J. Waks expands upon her first volume in the series rather than merely repeating it. Our heroine continues to test her limits, and to draw herself and her companions into a more sensual and textured mental world. Gerda Tau is humanoid, but not human; her interactions with her creator and with her supporting cast of characters are colorful, sensuous, and creative. Our hero starts to learn his limits, and to channel his violent intensity. Our villains continue to probe the unknown; the mad scientist labs and caves are deftly drawn and cleverly exploited. The forest planet grows in variety as it unveils sinister new locales. And now there are new layers of conspiracy to underlie and to direct the action. Few, if any, challenges are what they first seem. Yet the author draws us into these webs of misdirection and deceit with such skill that we both accept and enjoy them as they occur. If you enjoy space opera, buy and enjoy both of Waks' volumes.
Hammerspace continues the saga that was begun in Tau4, with enough continuity to keep it familiar, and enough twists and new material to keep it fresh. An exciting and well-paced novel, it holds one's attention from the beginning to the end, and leaves the reader waiting expectantly for the next installment.
I found Hammerspace to be a fun quick read one of those books that keeps you up late so you can see what happens next.
The nature of my work(as a creator of miniatures) exposes me continually to the realms of fantasy and Sci-Fi; when I find a series that takes me to a new level of imagination,its really thrilling.V.J.Waks launched her series with Tau 4--tantalizing,provocative,richly written. Hammerspace kicks her chararcters and storyline up a huge notch--with intensity, sensuality and a plot that blows the lid off the conspiracy in Tau 4. Hammerspace is a great read and a great ride-- highly recommended.
