Derek Paterson was planning to leave Chile the day of the coup in 1973. A few days later he was incarcerated with thousands of others in the notorious National Stadium, scene of several documented killings and torture. After a nightmare lasting nearly two weeks he was finally freed - and expelled.
Nearly 36 years later he returned in much happier circumstances, as the husband of the New Zealand Ambassador to Chile. For three years he enjoyed Chilean hospitality and explored the fascinating country from north to south, reaffirming his love of the country and the people.

An excellent overview of Chile's turbulent era of divisive civil unrest. I appreciated hearing from someone who was not jaundiced in his approach, as one might be from the left or the right if they were actually from Chile. This is the brilliance of this book, it chronicles the personal experience of someone quite like myself who may have been caught up in the same situation during that era, had I actually traveled to Chile as I had thought of during that time. Fortunately for me, I was a few years younger and therefore a few years behind Mr. Paterson's pilgrimage and heard the horror stories being reported about innocent people being swept off the streets and incarcerated without due process. This book also provides great history, cultural and tourist information as it chronicles his trips throughout Chile. A great book! Kudos to Paterson for this fine effort.Product details
